The Embassy of Estonia is pleased to invite you to the conference
Memories Denied
The repression of memories of Stalinism
on Tuesday, October 21 2008 at 17.00-19.30
organised in co-operation with Politiken, the Foreign Policy Society and Copenhagen Business School
The conference opens with the presentation of an award-winning Estonian/Finnish documentary “Memories Denied” telling the story of a family under Stalinist terror in Estonia and in the Gulag.
The film is followed by a discussion with the participation of the film’s director Imbi Paju, historian and Stalinism researcher Erik Kulavig from the University of Southern Denmark and Uffe Østergaard, professor of history at Copenhagen Business School.
The discussion is moderated by Politiken journalist, Vibeke Sperling.
Topics: Repression of memories as the only method of self-defence for victims of communism, and the difficult healing from the wounds of history. Political and cultural need for a common history in today’s EU, where the memories of Nazi crimes often overshadow those of Stalinism.
The conference is in English.
Venue: Politiken’s conference hall Pressen, Vester Voldgade 33 (entrance in the courtyard). Registration is required no later than 20 October by e-mail embassy.copenhagen@mfa.ee or by phone 39 46 30 70.
