Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas met with Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and the Minister of Defence Peter Christensen

14.10.2016

Copenhagen, 14 October 2016 – Today Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas met with Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and the Minister of Defence Peter Christensen with whom defence cooperation was discussed.

“The security environment is tense and therefore a close relationship between Estonia and Denmark is even more important than ever, be it by strengthening NATO’s collective defence or by contributing to guaranteeing security outside the borders of NATO,” Prime Minister Rõivas said at the meeting with Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.

The Prime Minister mentioned that in today’s unpredictable security environment it is important that all European countries would consider security matters as important as Denmark and Estonia do, for whom this has always been a priority topic.

The meeting with the Minister of Defence of Denmark Peter Christensen focussed on the arrival of a Danish military unit in Estonia. The incidents on and above the Baltic Sea during the last weeks were also discussed.

“Violation of air borders in Estonia and Finland indicates clearly Russia’s attempts to pressurise the West by using different methods of strength.”  “In this light, the decisions made in Warsaw to strengthen the presence of NATO in the Baltic countries and Poland was very reasonable.”

Prime Minister Rõivas thanked the Defence Minister for Denmark’s contribution to strengthening the security provided by NATO – Denmark was the first country to secure the air space from the Ämari air force base after the events in Crimea in 2014. Denmark will contribute a company to serve in a battalion that will be led by the United Kingdom, and which will be positioned in Estonia.

“If our home is safe, then we can contribute to joint operations outside the borders of NATO, as we did in Afghanistan and as we do at the training mission in Iraq today,” Rõivas said about the wider defence cooperation context of Estonia and Denmark.

In the morning, Prime Minister Rõivas placed a wreath in commemoration of the Danish troops fallen in the international operations.
