AN ESTONIAN artist Markus Kasemaa will exhibit his art in Copenhagen Business School (CBS) from 1.02. – 15.03.2012

MARKUS KASEMAA (b. 1972) has studied art at Tartu Art School, Department of Sculpture (1990-1991) and at Tartu University, Department of Painting (1991-1995). He has had over 40 solo exhibitions since 1995 mostly in Estonia but also in Finland, Sweden, Belgium, Austria, Russia and SecondLife in different techniques like oil, acrylics, ink, graphite, gouaches, digipainting.

IN HIS OWN WORDS: For me value of an art piece comes from the idea or image or content, not so much from the used technique or material. There is nothing strange these days when a writer uses computer to write a novel or a composer uses it to create a symphony. It is normal that books are printed in print shops not hand-copied. All this does not undermine the value of a book or a piece of music. In addition to traditional galleries I like to show my art in more public places – places where people really are like city-space, shopping-centers, schools, libraries, offices, online, etc

Kadri Voorand is a young jazz singer and composer who won the award for "Best Young Jazz Talent of the Year", which is awarded annually. In 2009 she made a debut with her album "Tunde kaja". She has also collaborated with renowned American musicians and recorded the album "Anthony Branker and the Ascent". She has won awards both in Estonia and abroad. Kadri Voorand has studied jazz at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm.

Virgo Sillamaa is a guitarist, composer and arranger. In addition, he teaches at the Georg Ots' Music School in Tallinn. In 2008, Virgo Sillamaa won the Tiit Paulus-scholarship, which was awarded by "Viljandi Guitar Festival". He has studied jazz at in Estonia, Finland, Sweden and Holland.

Prime Minister Andrus Ansip in Copenhagen

On 31, October was Prime Minister Ansip in Denmark on a meeting of the prime ministers of the Nordic countries and Baltic States.

The topics at the meeting were – the economic situation, including the debt crisis in Europe, the Danish goals during the Presidency of the European Union, international issues, particularly developments in Libya, and North as well as plans for future cooperation with the Baltic States.

It was recognised at the meeting that the economic and financial situation in the Nordic and Baltic countries is very good compared to the southern regions of Europe and that the basis for new economic growth is favourable. In Prime Minister Ansip’s opinion it is completely logical for Nordic region countries to develop cooperation and plan their future together.

“The Nordic and Baltic countries share the same values,” noted Prime Minister Ansip. “This region is our home in economic terms. Estonia’s major trade partners are sitting around this table.”

Ansip expressed his hope that at the forthcoming working meetings the issues prioritised by all countries in the region could be addressed in greater detail, such as the further development of the common market, including the digital single market.

Today’s meeting of the Nordic and Baltic countries (NB8) summoned the heads of the governments of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland. NB8 is a regional format of cooperation whereas no other separate structure or organisation has been set up for cooperation. At the political level, the key form of cooperation is the annual meeting of prime ministers and foreign ministers.

President Toomas Hendrik Ilves on working visit in Denmark, October 23– 24, 2011

President is on working visit in Denmark and he will meet with the Danish Prime Minister, Helle Thorning-Schmidt, Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers, Halldór Ásgrímsson, and former long-term Minister of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, Uffe Ellemann-Jensen.

European economic and financial issues, security aspects and regional co-operation will be discussed at the meetings.

The Estonian Head of State is one of the principal guests at an international Cyber Defence and Security Conference in Copenhagen, where he will speak about Estonian internal and international activities in the sphere of organising cyber defence within the last four years.

Estonian Ambassador to Denmark Presents Credentials

On Friday, 14 October, Estonian Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark Katrin Kivi presented her credentials to Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.

In the discussion that took place after the presentation of credentials, Ambassador Katrin Kivi and Queen Margrethe II talked about Estonia and Denmark’s good bilateral relations. Ambassador Kivi stated that Estonia and Denmark’s political, defence-related, cultural and economic relations are very close. “Denmark is an important economic partner of Estonia. Co-operation between our countries is also very close within the European Union and NATO,” she added.

During their discussion, Ambassador Kivi also emphasised the importance of co-operation among the Nordic countries and in the Baltic Sea region as a whole. “The close communication network that we joined 20 years ago has helped our region become the most dynamic region in the European Union. Recently the Nordic and Baltic foreign ministers signed an agreement on the exchange of diplomats, which will create opportunities to reciprocally send diplomats to work in countries where we lack an embassy,” said Kivi, naming just one example of how co-operation based on common goals and values brings real results and sets a good example for other regions of the European Union.

Diplomatic relations between Estonia and Denmark were initially established on 5 February 1921, and in December 1990 Estonia opened its first foreign representation after World War II in Denmark. Denmark was the second country after Iceland to restore diplomatic relations with the re-independent Republic of Estonia in August of 1991. Estonia’s close ties with Denmark actually extend much further back in history. In Medieval times part of Estonia’s territory belonged to the Kingdom of Denmark, and legend has it that Denmark got its flag Dannebrog in the 13th century while fighting on a battlefield beside Toompea castle.

Ambassador Katrin Kivi was born on 18 July 1967 in Kärdla. Ambassador Kivi graduated from Tartu University in 1990 with a degree in German language and literature and continued her education at the University of Mannheim and the University of Bonn. Kivi began doing diplomatic work in 1993. Before being named the Estonian ambassador to Denmark, Katrin Kivi was the director of the general affairs division in the Foreign Ministry’s European Union department.

Külli, Kelli og Kalli – Three Estonian Artists in the Middle of a Creative Process

Fyns Graphic Workshop invites to the opening of an exhibition "Külli, Kelli og Kalli – Three Estonian Artists in the Middle of a Creative Process", where three Estonian artists Külli Suitso, Kelli Valk Kagovere and Kalli Kalde exhibit their works and show how and how differently from each other they print their graphic art. There will be a possibility to take a look into the workshops of the artists.

Inviting and exhibiting Estonian artists meets the desire to make contact between the graphic artists from Estonian and artists from Fyns Graphic Workshop. It is also helpful in communicating the know-how of Estonian artists and gives and insight into a different language of pictures. On the opening day, the three artists will show how they print their art.

The exhibition will be opened by the Estonian ambassador Ms Katrin Kivi in Fyns Graphic Workshop, in Odense on Friday 4. November, 2011 at 2 pm.

Exhibition of graphics by Kelli Valk-Kagovere at the Estonian Embassy in Copenhagen

From October 3, an exhibition of graphics by the Estonian artist Kelli Valk-Kagovere is displayed at the Estonian Embassy in Copenhagen.

Kelli Valk-Kagovere’s art bears influences of ancient Nordic petroglyphs and runes, Native American mythology and the nature. Human feelings and relations, however, emerge as the connecting, overarching power above all else. The exhibition, thus, portrays a glance into the depths of the human soul. The artist herself expresses her thoughts as follows:

“The most important in this world is that which is invisible to the eye. Only by seeing with our heart can we notice all details and angles clearly and in depth. The real world is within each one of us and it can differ from the impression we make on others. It is like the top of an iceberg. It is difficult to read another person’s thoughts and feelings. The material world is not the only reality; the world of emotions and thoughts is sometimes much more important, closer, our own. In our mind we all constantly write love letters, also to those who are no longer amongst us.”

Kelli Valk-Kagovere graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts in 1978 and her art has since been displayed at exhibitions in Estonia and many other countries in Europe and beyond. In Denmark, she has previously had personal exhibitions in Ærøskøbing (2003) and Odense (2008) and participated in various other projects. Kelli Valk-Kagovere has been awarded several prizes, including a diploma at the 2nd Tallinn Illustrations´ Triennial in 2006. She is a member of the Estonian Artists’ Association and the Association of Estonian Printmakers.

The exhibition is open to visitors from Monday to Friday at 12.00-16.00. It will stay at the Embassy until spring.

Exhibition of Jüri Mildeberg’s illustrations at Hjørring Library

In the period of 3-29 October, the Estonian artist Jüri Mildeberg’s illustrations are exhibited at Hjørring Library in Northern Jutland.

Jüri Mildeberg is an acknowledged Estonian artist and illustrator, whose art has been displayed at international exhibitions from France and Finland to Japan. He has illustrated nearly 20 books. Mildeberg’s works have been acknowledged by the Tallinn Illustrations Triennial and the International Board on Books for Young People. The book „In a Strange Little Town” (”Ühes väikses veidras linnas”) written by Aino Pervik and illustrated by Jüri Mildeberg was given the award for the most original and unique Estonian children’s book in 2010.

Mildeberg’s works are characterized by a mystique that brings the viewer to a world of fantasy full of humorous surprises and strange creatures. At the exhibition 14 illustrations are displayed, created using a special oil pastel technique.

Estonian teams at beach volleyball Olympic Qualification in Copenhagen

The beach volleyball qualification (pool C) for Olympic Games 2012 in London will take place at Ofelia Beach in the centre of Copenhagen on 9-11 September 2011. The two competing Estonian teams are Mari-Liis Graumann - Anu Ennok and Maarja Kerner - Kadri Puri.

The Estonian teams will be playing against Denmark on 9 September at 10.00/11.00 and 14.00/15.00 at Court 2 for quarterfinals. The semi-finals and finals will take place on 10 and 11 September, respectively.

All participating teams:
Women: Austria, Greece, Slovenia, Estonia, Denmark, Bulgaria
Men: Netherlands, Turkey, Denmark, Italy, Portugal, Romania

There is no entrance fee for spectators.

From 1 November 2011 vehicles exceeding 3.5 tonnes must have environmental zone stickers in Denmark

From 1 November 2011 it is required that all diesel-powered trucks and busses exceeding 3.5 tonnes must have environmental zone stickers when they enter environmental zones (Miljøzone) in Denmark. The environmental zones are located in Copenhagen, Frederiksberg, Aalborg, Aarhus and Odense.

All vehicles exceeding 3.5 tonnes must have environmental zone stickers placed visibly on the window by the driver’s seat. The environmental zone sticker is issued on the basis of information about the vehicle’s Euronorm, and whether the vehicle has been post-fitted with a particulate filter.

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet: Denmark’s support helped Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania regain their rightful place in Europe

At a commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the restoration of Baltic independence, hosted by Danish Crown Prince Frederik in Amalienborg Castle in Copenhagen on August 28, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet emphasized the importance of Danish support and the special
nature of the friendship ties between Estonia and Denmark in the present day.

Paet said that the restoration of independence 20 years ago was founded on the active support of friendly countries. “Even though some friends and close partners took a sceptical or doubtful stance toward the re-independence of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania,” Paet said,
“Denmark supported it fully.”

Relations between the Baltics and Denmark did not begin at re-independence, of course, but are rooted deep in history. Denmark refused to recognize the Soviet occupation and had recognized the independence of the three countries in the interwar era. History has left diverse traces in Estonian-Danish relations dating from centuries before. For instance, Danes derived their flag, the Dannebrog, from Estonia in the 13th century, Paet noted.

The political, cultural and economic relations between Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and the Nordic countries remain close today, Paet said. “Denmark is one of Estonia’s most important economic partners. Cooperation is also close in the European Union and NATO,” he added.

Paet was accompanied at the dinner hosted by Prince Frederik by professor Marju Lauristin and MEP Tunne Kelam, two individuals who played key roles in the restoration of independence.

The Estonian “Theatre in a Suitcase“ at Bornholm Puppet Festival

On 3 -11 September 2011, a big Puppet Festival will take place on Bornholm, where puppet theatres from Europe and elsewhere come together to perform all over the island.

The Estonian actor Heino Seljamaa and his one-man-theatre „Theatre in a Suitcase“ will participate in the festival with the play „Sleeping Beauty“. The performances will take place in Bornholm’s schools: 7 September in Kongeskærskolen, 8 September in Solen Kindergarten and 9 September in Kildebakken school.

Conference „Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania 1991-2011“ at Copenhagen University

On 24 August 2011 a conference is held at Copenhagen University to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Denmark’s restoration of diplomatic ties with Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The conference is hosted by the Foreign Policy Society, Copenhagen University and the three Baltic embassies in Copenhagen.

The introduction to the conference will be made by Uffe Ellemann-Jensen, Minister for Foreign Affairs 1982 – 1993 and Chairman of the Foreign Policy Society since 1993.

Mart Laar, Estonian Prime Minister 1992-1994 and 1999-2002, and Minister of Defence since April 2011.

Exhibition of Aili Palm’s Ceramics at Ballerup Library

On 3 – 31 August, the Estonian artist Aili Palm’s lace-patterned ceramics can be seen at Ballerup Library. The bowls, trays, vases, baskets and lucky buttons are made in a pottery kiln at Seto Farm Museum or in an electric furnace, using different techniques and materials. In addition to the ceramics, a number of photos by Pelle Kalmo depicting interesting details of Aili Palm’s other works are exhibited.

Kristjan Järvi and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra perform at Koncerthuset

On Thursday, 15 September 2011, the Estonian conductor Kristjan Järvi and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra will perform Igor Stravinsky’s ballet music “Rite of Spring” (Le Sacre du Printemps). In March, Kristjan Järvi and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, who first gave a concert together in 2010, announced the beginning of a close creative partnership.

In addition, the Danish piano trio Trio con Brio will give a premi?re of the Swedish composer Sven-David Sandström’s „Tripelkoncert”. The trio consists of the Danish pianist Jens Elvekjær and two South Korean sisters, Soo-Jin Hong og Soo-Kyung Hong, who also work as concertmasters at the Danish National Symphony Orchestra.

The concert will take place in DR Koncerthuset at 19.30. Tickets: 140 – 520 kr. / youth (under 30) 70 – 260 kr.

Ingrid Hagel at Copenhagen Jazz Festival on July 9

The Estonian musician Ingrid Hagel with her band Ingrid’s Ensemble will perform at Copenhagen Jazz Festival on July 9. The band’s line-up is Soma Allpass (cello, vocals), Alexander Kraglund (violin, harmonica), Ingrid Hagel (violin, vocals and guitar) and Jeppe Holst (guitar). The ensemble will perform songs and instrumental music written by Ingrid Hagel.

The concert will take place at 17.00 in LiteraturHaus at Møllegade 7, 2200 København N. Ticket price: 50 kr.

Exhibition of Aili Palm’s Ceramics at Herfølge Library

In June, an exhibition of the Estonian artist Aili Palm’s lace-patterned ceramics takes place at Herfølge Library. In addition to the ceramics, a number of photos by Pelle Kalmo depicting interesting details of Aili Palm’s other works are exhibited.

Tallinn – Monte-Carlo Race Crosses Copenhagen and Rødby

Tallinn – Monte-Carlo Electric Race Marathon starts on June 2 with around ten participants in electric vehicles. During ten days, the marathon crosses 8 countries and 27 cities, including Copenhagen and Rødby on June 5 and 6.

Apart from an exciting race and the revival of a historical tradition, the purpose of the marathon is to promote environmental sustainability. It gives attention to the necessity of connecting Northern and Southern Europe with an environmentally friendly road covered with plugs for electric vehicles, and of enhancing cooperation between the regions.

The patron of the marathon is Prince Albert II of Monaco, who will himself compete in the Tallinn stage. The race is organized by the honorary consul of Monaco in Estonia Jüri Tamm.
