Estonian State Puppet and Youth Theatre "A LOLLIPOP AND 200 GRANDDADS" in Copenhagen http://www.estemb.dk/eng/frontpage/news/aid-1451 Imagine lollipops which make a child’s teeth play hide-and-seek out of sheer boredom so that the teeth disappear from the child’s mouth one by one. Imagine a sweater which eats noodles and as a result, becomes ever thicker and warmer. Imagine 200 grandfathers budding on a bush in the garden who are obsessed about growing cabbages, and a carnivore plant that has eaten all of the turkey steaks in town.

These and many other amazing characters were seen in a playful fantasy in which actor Tarmo Männard told his favourite stories. This took place in Copenhagen, at the hall next to Enghave church on May 24, 2010.

Sofi Oksanen's "Purge" published in Danish http://www.estemb.dk/eng/frontpage/news/aid-1418 Sofi Oksanen - Puhastus

The Finnish writer Sofi Oksanen's bestselling novel Purge has been published in Danish under the title "Renselse".

Purge is a chilling drama of two generations of women, set in wartime 1940’s Estonia during the Soviet occupation and in the same country in the 90’s as it grapples with the realities of a new Europe. Narrated through a polyphonic choir of individual voices, Purge tells the suspenseful and dramatic story of Aliide Truu, an old Estonian woman whose hands are soiled with the crimes she committed during the Soviet era, and Zara, a young trafficking victim who in the present has managed to escape and has come to seek shelter at Aliide’s countryside home. As the two women start to approach each other and the links between them are revealed, a tragic and complex family drama of rivalry, lust, and loss that plays out during the worst years of the Soviet occupation of Estonia unfolds.

The novel has won its author Finland’s premier literary award, The Finlandia Award 2008, and is short listed for the Nordic Council Literature Prize 2010.

Purge is translated from Finnish by Helena Idström and published by Rosinante.

A few words about the film from the festivals catalogue:

„A question of honour” could be a fitting subtitle for Ilmar Raag’s heart- and brain-rending portrait of an Estonian school class, where bullying has turned into bitter and uncompromising horror. Joosep is the class’s notorious victim. Not one day or hour passes that he isn’t thrown naked into the girl’ changing room or beaten to pulp in the school yard. When Kaspar, one of the class’s popular boys, one day defends Joosep all hell breaks loose. Despite all the best intentions, Kaspar’s attempts to help Joosep are used as further ammunition to bully the poor lad , who ends up taking the last possible way out. „The Class” is so horrendous that one wishes it was pure fiction. But unfortunately, it isn’t.
